Development Strategy for the Black Forest Panoramic Road, Germany
Client:
Assocation 'Schwarzwaldhochstrasse'
Brief project description:
The Black Forest Panoramic Road, the oldest tourism road in the Black Forest, opened 75 years ago. Running for 60 km from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt along the B500, it passes through some of the most beautiful viewpoints in the northern mountains at an altitude of between 800 and 1,000 metres.
In the 1960s, the Panoramic Road experienced a significant tourism boom, with growing numbers of one-day tourists and overnight guests continuing to visit until the 1990s. However, after reaching a peak in 1991, the number of overnight stays started to decline.
However, with the creation of the Black Forest National Park, the implementation of LEADER initiatives and the introduction of the Schwarzwald Plus Card, the Black Forest Panoramic Road region is now entering a period of transition. The aim of the project was to develop a vision for the future of tourism in the region and to discuss potential strategies, projects and responsibilities. The results of the research, the content of the discussions, the development potential and the ideas for measures were summarised in a strategy paper.
Key elements of the project:
- How should the Black Forest Panoramic Road be considered in the context of the potential tourist attractions of the National Park Region?
- What development opportunities and potential are there, and how can they be realised?
- How can the Black Forest Panoramic Road Association establish its position within the region's wider tourism structure?
- Which themes and offering would be most suitable for this route?
- What changes to responsibilities and tasks would be associated with further development?
